Happy Birthday: Bob Marley (1945-1981)

Bob Marley was born on this date (February 6) in 1945. He was a Jamaican singer and songwriter whose name more than anyone represents reggae music, the tenets of Rastafarianism, and the struggle of the economically and politically oppressed. [SOURCE]

Bob Marley's music is just as relevant today as it was when it was first released.

He still remains a legend!

RawDawg, Quick & Lady D - I'm thinking that there are many in the current generation that don't have any appreciation for Bob Marley or his music. I'm glad I was able to give him some props on my blog on the anniversary of his birth.

Villager, especially in this time I have a feeling Bob would have been one of the first players on instruments in Haiti.

He was and will always be an inspiration for me.

1Love,
Geoffrey

Geoffrey - If we don't honor our own ... who will? I am not a big fan of reggae, however, I am appreciative of what Bob Marley meant to his people and to reggae music...

I was viewing the youtube video of Bob Marley singing "War" and as msladydeborah stated...it's "just as relevant today" as it was when he first recorded it.

The only show I attended as a young woman was when he performed at Vanderbilt University & there was this huge image of Haile Selassie's head on the body of a lion that seemed to overpower the stage. The aura of that show was spellbinding and we were all singing along with the songs. Amazing in itself for we were from different ethnic groups, ages and I'm sure educational backgrounds.

One of his quotes about music was so true that night:

"One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain."

The other quote lends true today especially with some of the comments made here and that is...

"My music will go on forever. Maybe it's a fool say that, but when me know facts me can say facts. My music will go on forever."

Carolyn - Thanx for sharing both your memories and the Bob Marley quotes. I must admit that I never had a proper introduction to reggae music ... so I've never properly appreciated the role that Bob Marley played in the musical genre or the Caribbean culture.
